Jair Bolsonaro arrested after being deemed a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of his move to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
