The player's retrieving strategy and frequent emotional displays on the playing surface had led some to question if his skill to play at the highest level was over.

Yet the 29-year-old has made changes in the past month, striving to come to the net and compete aggressively, reinforced by an better service.

He recovered from a break down in the initial set against the challenging Frenchman, winning four of the last five exchanges to go ahead.

Both players swapped breaks in the second set before Moutet, attempting for his maiden tour victory, took control to push for a decider.

The opponent defended four initial break points in a tight third set before the Russian won the break to 15 to secure the win.

Appropriately, the winner earned the win with a shot at the net area, with the Frenchman unable to manage a shot after a lengthy match.
